Wine Advocate 92 points - The 2011 Le Dix Cabernet Sauvignon is a textbook Cabernet Sauvignon, very classical, with the typical descriptors of the variety framed by some oak and a medium-bodied palate, perhaps lacking a bit in the mid-palate a little austere, but with good balance and acidity to evolve nicely in the bottle. Le Dix, meaning 10 in French, was introduced in 1996 to celebrate Domaine Barons de Rothschild (Lafite)'s first ten years in Chile. It is only produced in extraordinary vintage years. Le Dix de Los Vascos is grown in the exceptional vineyard, called El Fraile, which means "the monk”, the oldest planted vineyard at Los Vascos and the original vineyard on the estate. The vineyard is 100% planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and many parcels of the vineyard have vines reaching 80 years in age. The vineyard is fairly large, covering some 200 acres, Le Dix is produced from severely reduced yields from El Fraille (the best) combined with the most rigorous cuvee selection - the resulting wine is of world class stature.
Producer
At the beginning of the 19th century, a London-born doctor left his ship and settled in La Serena, Chile’s second oldest city. His grandson became the first member of the Edwards family to make wine in Chile’s ideal environment for growing grapes, and thereby founded a family tradition that flourishes to this day. In 1976, his descendant, Luis Felipe Edwards Sr, purchased a large estate at Puquillay in some of the best viticultural land in Chile’s Central Valley. Thus began the latest chapter in the family’s winemaking story. He restored old vineyards planted in the 1930s and early 1950s, introduced several new grape varieties and eventually built a winery equipped with the latest technology to make and bottle wine under his own name. His first vintage, Luis Felipe Edwards Cabernet Sauvignon 1994, was launched on the international market in late 1995 and is still magnificently drinkable to this day. Today, 100% under the family’s control, the company exports to over 60 countries. Vina Luis Felipe Edwards is recognized worldwide as one of the Chile’s leading producers, with a range of high quality and award-winning wines produced by skilful local winemakers assisted by top international consultants.
