The wine was aged on its lees with battonage. Vibrant notes of citrus, tropical fruit, and lemongrass are framed by hints of cream. A backbone of minerality and nicely balanced undertones of herbal and white florals provide complexity and length to this racy, elegant white.
Wine Advocate 87 points - The 2013 Sauvignon Blanc is blended with 4% Semillon and has a light grassy, grapefruit-scented bouquet. The palate is crisp and focused with sour lemon on the entry, plenty of green apple and a well-defined and focused, gooseberry finish. (Oct 2014)
Located in Elgin, South Africa, Andrew Gunn and family acquired this beautiful, but run-down apple farm in 1997. A first generation South African, Andrew can trace his ancestry back to the Vikings, hence the long boat emblem on the labels. The vineyards of Iona are located on a mountain plateau in the coolest region of South Africa, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Sauvignon Blanc is the main focus, accounting for nearly 65% of Iona’s plantings, along with Syrah, Mourvedre, Viognier and Bordeaux varietals. Winemaker John Seccombe produces clear, focused wines with a sense of place, while bringing a fresh outlook on Iona’s unusual vineyard sites.
|(96% Sauvignon Blanc/4% Semillon). Different Sauvignon Blanc clones from the estate were vinified separately using reductive vinification with cultured yeasts Vin7, VL3 and X5. A small percentage of Semillon is typically added to the blend to enhance mid-palate depth and complexity.
|The wines of Iona come from a dramatically unique site in the Cape Winelands.
The vineyards are on a mountain plateau 420 metres above sea level, surrounded by the Kogelberg Nature Reserve, and overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
In a country where cool sites are precious, these vineyards are like gold — the grapes ripening up to two months later than other Cape vineyards and in perfect balance. Iona is South Africa’s coolest vineyard site.
Andrew Gunn and family acquired this beautiful, but run-down apple farm in 1997. It was renamed ”IONA” after the remote, spiritual island off the west coast of Scotland. We Gunns can trace our ancestry to the Vikings that landed in Scotland in the 900s, hence the Viking longboat emblem on our labels.
