Founded in 1995, the family-owned Lancaster Estate produces highly acclaimed wines under their Lancaster Estate and Roth Estate labels. The estate is situated on 53 hillside acres at the southern tip of Alexander Valley, near the confluence of the Knights Valley and Chalk Hill appellations. 24 vineyard blocks are sub-divided into 27 distinct sub-blocks planted exclusively to the classic Bordeaux varieties. The warm climate, depleted soils, and rugged hillsides are uniquely suited to these varieties.
The vineyards are sustainably farmed. Cover crops are planted to improve drainage, replenish soil nutrients and reduce erosion. Each vineyard block is separated by varietal during harvest, defining each section by maturity and richness of character. The grapes are hand-picked, hand-sorted, and destemmed before fermentation. The must is cold soaked in temperature controlled, stainless steel tanks for several days prior to fermentation with indigenous yeasts which enhance the wines’ expression. Extended maceration encourages greater extraction of flavors and structural development. The finished wines are separated by attribute and varietal and then staged for blending and barrel aging. The wines are aged in French oak barrels for 18-24 months in up to 8 different types of French oak at varying levels of toast, in order to develop balance and complexity. Following aging, the wines are bottled unfiltered.
The winery was completed in 2001 with the excavation of more than 9,000 square feet of caves. Carved deep into the heart of No Name Hill, cellar operations and aging take place under naturally regulated temperatures and humidity.
Jesse Katz, most recently of Screaming Eagle, is the winemaker at Lancaster and Roth Estates. He credits his winemaking philosophy and style to the influence of his mentors – winemakers Andy Erickson, Paul Hobbs, and Robert Foley. Jesse’s production team includes consulting winemaker David Ramey, assistant winemaker David Drake and vineyard consultant, Phil Freese.
