Ripe, velvety, old-viney fruit aromas and flavors dominated by blackberries and black cherries are marked by distinct notes of violets, toast and minerals in this wine, and are set in a powerful yet elegant tannic structure.
Wine Advocate 92 points - A fragrant version, this red offers aromas of wild herbs that lead to currant and cranberry flavors. This turns tight, wrapped in firm tannins, remaining persistent and long. Needs some time. Best from 2017 through 2027. 105 cases imported.-BS
Steve Tanzer 94 points - Good medium red. Raspberry, redcurrant and strong spicy oak on the nose. Densely packed but a bit youthfully rough today, with raspberry and spicy oak flavors framed by sound acidity and substantial dusty tannins. Plenty of breadth and energy here but this grand cru will need at least a couple more years to harmonize in bottle.
Burghound 92 points - Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Clos de Vougeot 2011 from Louis Jadot has a relatively simple bouquet that lacks the complexity of some of its peers, although at least it is clean and fresh and less green. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, touches of white pepper and sous-bois that form its masculine, austere, but at the end of the day, not disagreeable finish. This is one for those that like classic style of Clos de Vougeot.
Grand Cru - Côte de Nuits
91-94 PTS – International Wine Cellar
Good medium red. Expressive aromas of black cherry, licorice and menthol; reduced today but very Clos Vougeot. Dense and vibrant, with very good underlying spine to its black fruit flavors. Finishes with substantial ripe tannins and excellent length. A serious Clos Vougeot in the making. (1/2013)
92 PTS – The Wine Advocate
The 2011 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a fragrant, well-defined bouquet with pure fresh strawberry, Morello cherry and citrus aromas. The palate is well-balanced with a fine grip, good weight, more comes across more masculine than the nose suggests, but with a firm confident finish. Good aging potential here. Drink 2015-2030. 89-92 PTS – Burghound
"A very toasty nose evidences a hint of tar on the mentholated nose both red and dark berry fruit and pungent earth aromas. There is good volume to the unusually supple, suave and smooth middle weight flavors that possess an opulent mouth feel as there is a plenitude of palate coating dry extract. There is a touch of warmth on the moderately austere, notably firm, robust and powerful finish that isn't especially refined but it is impressively persistent."
This 125-acre Grand Cru vineyard faces east on a range of soils, from chalky and stony clay on the higher parts of the slope to moist, rich, compact soils on the lower slope. Jadot owns just over 5 acres of the Clos. The Pinot Noir grapes are fermented for up to 4 weeks in tanks, and then the wine is matured in oak barrels for 18 months.
