Rich and intense aromas of lemon, lime leaf, citrusflowers, honey and slightly nutty baked pie crust. The creamy texture is nicely complemented by expressions of white stone fruits (nectarines and peaches) and Granny Smith green apple with hints of marzipan on the finish.
Wine Advocate 90 points - You know you’re doing something right when, after 45 years of Chardonnay winemaking, they name a California Chardonnay style after your winery, the “Montelena style.” In short, it means a non-malolactic, minimally oaked Chardonnay. This estate has long made one of the best examples of a quiet, restrained Chardonnay that ages for 20 or more years. Montelena’s 2012 Chardonnay possesses zesty acidity as well as hints of white currants, delicate wood, tangerine oil and spice. Long and zesty with no noticeable oak (despite its barrel aging), it should drink well for 10-15 years. (Oct 2014)
Good bright yellow. Yellow fruits, spearmint and honey on the nose. Juicy and intensely flavored, with very good acid cut to the apple and lemon flavors. Not yet complex but this has density and a silky texture-not to mention firm spine-and should reward a few years of patience. Barrett pointed out that leaf roll virus in one of the chardonnay blocks has the effect of delaying the ripening, allowing the fruit to mature at low sugars levels.
