Wine Spectator 90 points - The 2013 Proprietary Red Blend The Prisoner is a creative blend of 44% Zinfandel, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Petite Sirah, as well as Syrah, Grenache and Charbono. This dense, full-bodied, opulent red reveals gutsy, rich, peppery, meaty, blackberry, blackcurrant and licorice notes. A savory, lusty, heady red, it begs for a grilled steak or a big, juicy hamburger. Drink it over the next 4-5 years.
90 PTS – Wine Spectator
"Ripe, jammy and sweet, this is loaded with toasty oak. Subtle this is not, loaded with flavor, offering notes of black cherry, chocolate, licorice and cinnamon spice. Should appeal to fans of the style. Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Syrah and Charbono."
90 PTS – The Wine Advocate
"There are 20,000 cases of the 2012 The Prisoner, which is an interesting blend of 46% Zinfandel, 22% Cabernet Sauvignon,18% Petite Sirah, 12% Syrah, and a small amount of Charbono. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by a big, peppery, meaty, Rhone-like bouquet with hints of bay leaf, unsmoked cigar tobacco, black currants and sweet jammy cherries. Medium to full-bodied and explosively fruity, this is a lovely, hedonistic, seriously endowed red to drink over the next 3-4 years."
The wine has a deep ruby red hue that is framed in rich crimson. Aromas of black cherry and plum, surrounded by roasted co¬ffee beans and vanillin oak accents. The entry is powerful and lush with flavors of bing cherry, blueberry and cocoa. Soft and velvety tannins round out the finish making this wine approachable and inviting.
"The 2012 vintage was truly a great vintage. Mother Nature was kind to us and we are really happy about the quality of the fruit. It was a slow and cool growing season that allowed for great hang time and optimal ripeness. We really had fun tasting and blending this wine because we had so many great lots to work with." - Jen Beloz, Winemaker
|In the relentless pursuit of creating inherently delicious wines, we are inspired by making wines that are truly unique and intriguing. Our mission is to forge our way off the beaten path, seek interesting varietals and blend them together to make wines that are authentic, approachable and thought-provoking.
When we took ownership of The Prisoner and Saldo in 2009 from Orin Swift, we knew assembling the right team would be essential. With more than a decade of winemaking experience at Ravenswood crafting Zinfandel, Jen Beloz was the ideal person to take the lead. In order to remain true to the wine’s original style and vision, Jen worked alongside Dave Phinney, founder of The Prisoner, for the first two vintages.
In 2012, she took the lead and seamlessly blended the wines across the entire portfolio. Jen’s role extends far beyond the cellar to grape sourcing and collaborating with our family of vineyard growers. Much of her time is spent visiting our vineyard sites across California’s premier wine-growing regions, carefully assessing the style and quality of the fruit in order to create authentic and impactful wines.
